Listen, I get it, when you are stressed out, saying “I am calm” feels like a crock of crap. But, affirmations are one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. Bonus, they are free-fifty-free to create and use. So, let’s dig into the truth about affirmations.
What exactly are affirmations?
Affirmations are short, positive, specific statements designed to overcome negative thoughts. They help you believe in and create the positive things you want to see in your life.
Why affirmations work
If you pay close attention to your thoughts, you’ll be surprised at how often your mind slips into negativity about yourself and your current or even future situation. According to one study, up to 70% of our thoughts are negative.
Think of your Mouth and your Thoughts as Expert Witnesses in the trial of your life. Your brain is the judge. Whatever your Mouth and Thoughts tell The Honorable Brain become Fact. And the more emotion tied to statement, the more valid your brain sees it. Positive emotion, negative emotion, your brain doesn’t care. It sees it as evidence that the statement is true.
What you believe, becomes fact for you. And what you say, becomes what you believe.
Not only that, your brain is the Google of your body. If you Google Jason Momoa one time, you will be looking at Jason Momoa photos every single time you get online. (not a bad problem to have, but…) If you say, even to yourself, “I’m not a good public speaker” when you have the opportunity to speak in public, your brain will retain that belief. And every time you are asked to speak, your brain will remind you that you are not capable.
Affirmations allow you to communicate with your subconscious mind and change those limiting, negative thoughts. Imagine your brain is a computer program; affirmations allow you to re-write the code that controls the program. They are the ALT-CTRL-DEL of your brain. When you actively spend time saying and concentrating on these short positive statements eventually, your subconscious mind picks up on them.
How To Use Affirmations
There are a few ways that you can choose to use your affirmations. First, concentrate on the things in your life that you want to change. Try to keep it simple by focusing on one at a time. Feel free to write a few different ones that pertain to the same subject.
My go-to affirmation is I am worthy and deserving of success. I am humble and grateful to serve others and nothing but good will come from it.
Then choose a time to repeat the sayings to yourself every day. You can even make a recording of yourself repeating the affirmations with soothing music in the background. This is especially helpful for using affirmations in the morning and at night when you have a stronger link to your subconscious.
Repeating the affirmations while looking at yourself in the mirror can be incredibly powerful. PRO TIP: Make eye contact with yourself while repeating it. It will feel weird, but you’re a hottie, enjoy the view.
Printing out your affirmations and displaying them in places you will see them throughout the day can be an effective way to keep your affirmations top-of-mind. My favorite locations are the bathroom mirror, planner, and phone or computer home screen.
The truth about affirmations is they are versatile and easy to use.
Tips for writing your own affirmations
- Write them in the present tense, because that’s the only way to improve your life in the present moment.
- Be short and concise to keep things simple.
- Read and write your affirmations when you’re calm and away from distractions.
- Remember to stay positive.
Affirmations Can Change Your Life
The truth about affirmations is they can change your life, starting with your thought patterns and beliefs about yourself. When it comes affirmations, the only requirement is to approach it with an open mind. It may be difficult at first, but the key is to keep repeating the affirmations and believe that what you are saying, you are becoming. Eventually, your brain will believe you.
